When I was a teenager, my father was an ad salesman.
When he came home from work at 4:30 in the morning, he’d bring his wife home with him, so they could be there for dinner.
And when we were in the car, I’d take the phone and put it to my ear and listen to it.
The way my father had his work done, it was like listening to a song.
We were a happy family.
When I moved to New York City, I was in my first year of college, and I was working as a copywriter for a magazine.
When the magazine went bankrupt, I took a job at a copy shop.
At that point, I had to make a living as a freelancer.
I would sometimes work as an independent contractor, but I also did my own ads for the company.
The magazine, too, was a little like the car: You’d get your car repaired, and then you’d drive to the next stop, take it back and get the car back.
I think about that all the time.
In the late ’80s, I got a call from a colleague of mine, and he said, “You’re on the cover of the magazine.”
And I thought, I’m going to call my mother to see what’s going on, but then I remembered the phone call I’d just gotten.
I had never been on the magazine cover before.
I’d never seen it before, and this guy had just told me that the cover was going to be a story about my family.
So I started thinking, What do I do?
I thought about what I could do for my family, what could I do for the magazine.
And then I decided that if I did my best, and if I was the best copywriter in the world, I could get the cover story.
So my mom got in touch with me.
She said, You’re the only one who can get the magazine covered.
And so I started researching.
I went to a couple of magazines, and eventually I came across the story of my family and I knew I wanted to do the same.
And I called my sister and told her about the story, and she said, What?
You have no idea what that story is?
And I said, Well, it’s the story that my family is really proud of.
It’s their story, the one that you want to hear.
So the magazine did have a story, so I sent them a copy.
And the story came out and they did an article about my sister.
And that was the start of my career in advertising.
As the years went by, my dad grew more interested in helping me out, and as my career progressed, he became more and more interested, too.
He would help me with things, like set up my new website, so he could sell more of my ads.
He’d do whatever I asked.
And my brother was a big fan of his, too—he loved the way I handled my own advertising.
My sister was more of an ad guy.
I didn’t really want to do it, but she was my first client.
I was just going to do my best.
And one day she was like, You know, I think it would be fun if we could do this, you know?
She was just a kid.
She didn’t understand the idea of doing ads, and we were just hanging out in our living room, and there was this big picture of the house, and the big picture on the wall was a sign saying, The Home.
She was so excited.
So we decided that we would do a full-page ad in the New York Times.
We had our whole ad team in New York.
And we were getting lots of calls.
I remember that day, I didn’s a lot of calls, like, What is this?
What are you doing?
Why are you calling me?
And they said, This is my sister, you are her client.
And they were really excited.
She called me and said, Why don’t you just do this?
She thought it would make me happy.
I told her, You’ll never understand.
I’ll do it.
She’s really excited about it.
So she did the whole thing.
And she’s been an incredible client ever since.
But what I’m trying to do now is put out the word.
She is my first real client.
What I’m really trying to say is, You can do it with a little bit of luck.
Because I had a very lucky time, and so the only thing that I have to do is to put out some positive energy.
And if you have a little chance, you can do something great.
And it’s just a matter of time.
And you’ll see.
